TMJ Pain, Jaw Problems, Bite Issues and TMD Treatment — Patient Education

A Place for Learning • Discovery • Recovery • Healing

TMD treatment is one of the most misunderstood areas of modern dentistry. If you are reading this page you have probably already seen multiple doctors, tried multiple TMD treatment options and still do not have answers. That experience is more common than you know — and it is not your fault. Effective TMD treatment usually requires more than what conventional dental care typically offers. TMJ dysfunction, chronic jaw pain, neck tension and bite problems are among the most misdiagnosed and undertreated conditions in dentistry. This page is here to help you understand what may be causing your symptoms and what a GNM-trained clinician can offer that conventional dental care often cannot.

You deserve accurate information. Use it wisely.

Today’s patient wants to be informed about the signs and symptoms that arise when teeth become worn, muscles become tender, and jaw joints are malpositioned. Understanding your treatment options — and the philosophy your dentist employs — is critical to achieving proper outcomes, whether you need relief from TMJ discomfort, cosmetic dentistry, or orthodontic care.

What Makes GNM TMD Treatment Different — Where Measurement Begins

When you saw your previous dentists, where did they measure your bite from? Most likely from the position your mouth naturally falls into — the same position that produced your symptoms. That is the habitual bite, and it is what conventional dentistry registers.

GNM measures from a different starting point: physiologic rest — the state in which your jaw muscles operate at minimal activity, balanced and at ease. From this baseline, the optimal mandibular position can be measured rather than assumed.

That single distinction — where the measurement begins — explains why GNM outcomes are different. Conventional dentistry starts from a symptomatic position. GNM starts from a physiologic one.

Do Your Own Research

You cannot depend on the healthcare system alone — especially if you are in pain and have seen numerous doctors. The more informed you are, the better equipped you will be to find the right care and the right clinician. This is especially important if you have already experienced failed cosmetic restorative dentistry.

It is your responsibility to work with those who are qualified and have the skill, knowledge and ability to meet your needs competently and effectively.

It is a physiologic approach to addressing the underlying factors that require expertise in both gnathologic and neuromuscular dentistry involving:

  • Masticatory muscle dysfunction problems
  • Temporomandibular joint pain problems
  • Joint derangement problems.

GNM addresses the cause and source of the problem rather than masking the symptoms. It is a measured approach.
